You’ve followed Islamic rulings. But do you actually know why scholars say what they say?

With this course you’ll develop the Islamic mindset that produced generations of great scholars. You’ll think through problems the way they did, using the same systematic approach that kept Islamic law consistent for over 1400 years.

Most Muslims accept fatwas without understanding the logic behind them. This can create real problems. You might follow rules you don’t truly grasp or worse, get conflicting advice from different sources.

We built this course because too many Muslims feel lost when scholars disagree. Imagine knowing exactly how Islamic legal reasoning works. Picture yourself understanding why one scholar permits something while another forbids it.

That’s what Usul al-Fiqh gives you. It’s the toolkit every classical scholar used to derive rulings from the Quran and Sunnah.

Students Will Learn

This course is based on the celebrated text Al-Usul Min Ilm Al-Usul by Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen.

It serves as a contemporary introduction to Usul al-Fiqh (Islamic Legal Theory), providing students with a foundational understanding of the sources of Islamic law and the principles scholars use to deduce legal rulings.

The course guides learners in navigating the Quran and Sunnah with the correct methodology, fostering a deeper comprehension of the Islamic legal framework.

  • The definition, scope and significance of Usul al-Fiqh in Islamic studies.
  • The sources of Islamic law: the Quran, Sunnah, Ijma’ (consensus), and Qiyas (analogy).
  • The principles and methods scholars employ to derive rulings from the Quran and Sunnah.
  • The types of legal rulings in Islam and how they are classified.
  • How Usul al-Fiqh bridges the understanding between revelation and real-world application.

Why Learn Usul al-Fiqh/ Methodology of Islamic Jurisprudence

Think of it like learning to drive versus being a passenger. Right now, you’re in the passenger seat trusting others to take you where you need to go. Usul al-fiqh puts you in the driver’s seat of your own Islamic understanding.

Following Islamic law without understanding it leaves you vulnerable to confusion and doubt.

When scholars disagree about divorce procedures or marriage contracts, you’re left guessing which opinion to follow. Usul al-fiqh gives you the tools to understand their reasoning instead of blindly accepting whatever sounds most convenient

When a scholar explains why certain conditions are required whilst others are recommended, you’ll follow the logic step by step. No more accepting rulings that don’t make sense to you.

This knowledge protects you from weak or incorrect religious advice.

You’ll recognise when someone quotes a hadith out of context or misapplies an analogy. That’s invaluable protection for your religious decisions.
